Galloway Cattle Society of GB and Ireland – Castle Douglas Spring Show and Sale

Friday 14th February 2020

Judge – Mr Brendon Douglas, 15 Ganvaughan Road, Castlederg, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland

One of the best shows of Galloways in recent years resulted in improved averages in all sections at the Society’s show and Sale held in Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas.  With growing demand for native bred and easy fed cattle, suitability for future payments in environmental payments and considerations for carbon footprint meant 6 new purchasers buying into the breed and many people went home empty handed.

It was a cracking day for the McClymont Family, Kirkstead, Yarrow, Allan and sons Sam and Oli as they received the top price  and  overall champion award for two of their lots forward out of their consignment of 10.  The top price was 16000gns for Kirkstead Commander who  received the Junior Championship award earlier in the day.  This stylish 14 month old bull is by Troloss Impeccable and bred from a Ronaldo of Fingland daughter – Kirkstead Nancy X7, he  is a full brother to the 10000gns Kirkstead Yeoman  sold at the spring sale in 2019 to The Pattinson Family, Hotbank.    This much talked about bull is off home with Stuart and Katherine McIntosh to their 100 head Huntly herd at their new home  at Borthwickshiels, Roberton, Hawick.

Kirkstead’s female champion – Kirkstead Rhapsody again by Troloss Impeccable and out of Penninghame Rhapsody, bought at the Penninghame herd dispersal sold to young Robbie McCornick, Barquhill, Wigtown, Newton Stewart for 4200gns, she sold incalf to Kirkstead Vindicator – a bull of which a half share has been sold privately for £10,000 to Fingland.

The next top priced bull –  Oryan of Balgray sold for 11000gns, this  18 month old  from David and Rosemarie Cornthwaite, Balgray, Lockerbie is also a  Troloss Impeccable son, the 9500gns bull which is shared by Balgray and Kirkstead.   The dam  also has Penninghame breeding – Penninghame Urania who was privately purchased.  This third prize bull  sold in a half way deal between near neighbours Jimmy Wallace, Fingland, Dalry and McMillan Family who trade as Messrs Wallace,  Hannaston, Dalry.

The overall champion bull – Troloss Nelson from Joe Cockburn former stockman at Troloss who retained a select number of head when the herd was dispersed privately in the Autumn sold for 7000gns, this 22 month old is by Blackcraig Dec a former stock bull at Troloss that has bred two previous male champions which sold for 22000gns and 15000gns, while the dam is Troloss Bonnie, a Kirkstead Lieutenant daughter.

The reserve female - Dram 3rd of Troloss again from Joe Cockburn is a March 2018 born daughter of Troloss Ring Pull and out of Troloss Dram an Blackcraig Dec daughter made 3200gns to Dessie Henry, Northern Ireland.

The Finlay’s, John, Ann and Iain from Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas again enjoyed a flying trade amongst the females receiving  the top price of 7500gns for Blackcraig Noreen Z789, a September 2017 born heifer  whose grand dam is a former reserve champion at the Highland Show which the same year made up part of the winning interbreed team. The sire is Blackcraig Xfactor, a bull which sold half share to Balgray for £10000. The stylish heifer is off home with new breeder June MacKenzie buying for her Dava herd from Wester Auchnagallen, Grantown on Spey.

The next three females through the ring  all from Blackcraig sold for 3500gns, 3200gns and 4000gns  being Blackcraig Noreen Z800 a Blackcraig Vagabond daughter sold to SK & S Brown, 18 Woodmarsh, North Bradley,   Blackcraig  Bertha Z818 and Blackcraig Blondchen Z828 sold to returning purchaser Derek Cowie, Polston Farm, The Mill, Maryculter.

The only bullock offered for sale was from Messrs Wallace, Hannaston, Dalry, their December 2018 born steer was sold to JWK Paterson & Son, Low Threemark, Stoneykirk, Stranraer for 1000gns and will be destined for the show ring.
